The rise of social media platforms has significantly altered the landscape of political communication and discourse. This paper examines the role of social media in political polarization from a global perspective, considering both its positive and negative effects on democracy, public opinion, and the formation of political identities. The paper reviews existing literature on the topic, analyzes case studies from different countries, and discusses the mechanisms by which social media platforms contribute to political fragmentation. The findings suggest that while social media can serve as a tool for political engagement and awareness, it also fosters echo chambers, reinforces ideological divides, and exacerbates partisan conflict. The global scope of this issue calls for comprehensive international cooperation to address its implications for democratic governance.
